Tia Hassan

Born and raised in east London, Tia threw herself into every dance class and drama club she could find before studying Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Kent and completing a Masters in Directing. Specialising in physical theatre, she trained at the studio of Grotowski’s protégé in Vienna, developing a love for clowning, carnival, acrobatics and dance. Passionate about taking spectacle and entertainment beyond traditional theatres, she founded her own company creating bold, playful shows for clubs and unconventional spaces.

Tia’s career spans the commercial and subsidised arts sectors, giving her a 360° understanding of the creative industries. From stage management and marketing to producing, programming and directing, she has worked with leading artists, festivals and brands — including MOVE IT, Big Dance Bus, Greater London Authority, Battersea Power Station, Royal Parks, The Royal Palace and Avant Garde Dance, Jonzi D and Birdgang.

Tia first joined East London Dance in 2009 as Marketing and Communications Manager and immediately connected with the organisation’s raw, authentic approach to community, creativity and culture. Returning years later as Creative Director and CEO, she now co-leads the organisation alongside Kate Scanlan. Together, they bring over 40 years of combined experience in dance, theatre, circus and hip hop culture, including ten years as Co-Creative Directors for MOVE IT, the world’s largest dance event.

Under their leadership, East London Dance has transformed its new home, The Talent House, into a vibrant hub for young people, artists, producers and the local community — a space that champions inclusivity, innovation, placing creativity and wellbeing at the heart of the organisation.
