Creative Spaces Symposium 2026
Tuesday 3 November 2026 - 9.30 - 16.30
English National Ballet, London City Island
Creative Newham’s Creative Spaces Symposium 2026 brings together artists, cultural organisations, community groups, developers, architects, funders and partners to ask what the future of creative and cultural space in Newham could look like.
Newham is changing rapidly, bringing new development, new communities and new opportunities, but also important questions about who gets to shape our neighbourhoods, where culture happens and how creative spaces can remain accessible, relevant and sustainable.
This year’s Symposium will create space for honest conversation, practical exchange and new connections across sectors that don’t always have the opportunity to sit around the same table.
-
Placemaking and co-creation – how can artists and communities have a meaningful role in shaping places from the beginning?
Unexpected and overlooked spaces – what possibilities exist in our high streets, public realm, green spaces, empty buildings and other less traditional spaces?
Living well and sustainability – how can culture, community and the environment come together to create more resilient places?
Learning from what doesn't work – what can we learn from projects, partnerships and spaces that haven't gone to plan?
Collaboration and networks – how can cultural organisations, communities, developers and other sectors work together more effectively?
Access and inclusion – who are our creative spaces designed for, who gets to participate and who might still be excluded?
Demystifying development – how can we make the language and processes around planning, development, funding and decision-making easier to understand and navigate?
-
The Symposium is for anyone interested in the future of creative and cultural spaces in Newham and beyond, whether you're an:
Artist
Freelancer
Cultural producer
Community organisation
Local government
Public sector officer
Cultural leader
Developer
Architect
Researcher
Funder
Policymaker
or simply someone interested in how culture can shape the places where we live and work.
You don't need to be an expert in planning or development. Part of the purpose of the day is to bring different experiences and perspectives together, make some of these conversations more accessible and create opportunities to learn from one another.

The full programme and speaker line-up will be announced soon.
Building on the
2025 Symposium
Our first Creative Spaces Symposium brought together 160+ artists, architects, cultural leaders, developers and community organisations at The Lab E20 to explore what makes creative spaces truly inclusive and sustainable.
Across panels, breakout sessions and discussions, the day explored themes including heritage spaces, co-design, equitable partnerships and local voices, helping to build a collective vision for Newham’s creative future.
On-going conversations are informing the development of a Creative Spaces Charter for Newham, creating a shared framework to support inclusive and sustainable cultural growth across the borough.
